　　如果代詞指代的是同一個名詞，且指代的語法與邏輯都正確，那么就算這個句子里中有其他可能先行詞，那么這個句子也是可以接受的，如

　　Supernovas destroy their immediate environments invast explosions, but by synthesizing heavy chemical elements, THEY provide the universe with the possibility of biochemistry-based life as we know it.

　　代詞they是復數，該句有3個復數名詞：supernovas(超新星), explosions, and chemical elements.

　　在邏輯上，they不能指代chemical elements，因為chemical elements不能合成自己。此外，從邏輯上是超新星提供life，而不是the explosions。在結構上，they和their更可能指代supernovas，因為它是這個句子的主語。所以，從結構上和邏輯上，they和their都指代的是supernovas。

　　同時要注意，代詞與名詞在句子中不一定起同樣的作用，例如，下面的句子是正確的，盡管主語they(代詞)指得不是前面句子中的主語the board：The board is investigating the compensation packages of several EXECUTIVES in order to determine how much they may have been improperly awarded. 該句中，they指代executives，是上一個句子中的賓語。

　　如果一個句子有歧義，那么檢查下句子的結構，匹配的句子結構能夠減少歧義。然而，代詞和先行詞不要求一定有相同的結構。

　　為了檢驗句子結構，我們必須知道代詞的幾種情況：主語、賓語和所有格。

　　主語代詞能夠做句子的主語，如I、you、he、she、it、we、they、who;例句：They arrived late.

　　賓語代詞可以是動詞或介詞的賓語，如me、you、him、her、it、us、them、whom;例句：No one saw them or talked to them.

　　所有格代詞指所有權或相似的關系，如my、mine、your、yours、his、her、hers、its、our、ours、their、theirs、whose;例句：Their presence went unnoticed.

　　上面的三種情況都可以指代句子中的名詞，如

　　MARY has a job that she loves. (she指代主語MARY)

　　If you see MARY, could you please give this to her?(her指代賓語her)

　　MARY drives her car every day. (所有格形式)

　　在上面的3個例子中，Mary是個名詞，所以任何的代詞都可以指代Mary，所以代詞與名詞的結構不一定一致。

　　“先行詞必須是名詞”規則有個例外：但先行詞是所有格代詞的形式時，要用所有格代詞的形式，看下面的例句：

　　MARY'S job is in jeopardy because of her mistake. (possessivecase)
